Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel Saturday called for a leader of opposition (LoP) post in the Lok Sabha.

He cited the example of Delhi Assembly to make his point while speaking at a discussion on “Changing Public Perception of Legislatures: The Role of Legislators in strengthening public faith in democratic institutions” in Gandhinagar. The discussion was a part of the 78th Conference of Presiding Officers of Legislative Bodies in India.

While the Congress was denied the LoP, Congress floor leader Mallikarjun Kharge was allotted the seat normally earmarked for the LoP in the Lok Sabha. The Congress does not have the numbers needed for staking claim to the post.

According to a Delhi government statement, Goel said the opposition plays a key role in the functioning of the legislature. He cited the example of the Delhi Assembly, where the leader of opposition — which “doesn’t even account for five per cent of the total strength of the House —was given the status of LoP.”

Goel said he “did not choose to apply a non-existent 10 per cent rule” to deny the position to the BJP in Delhi.
