The Samajwadi Party on Friday accused the Delhi Police of being “callous and insensitive” in handling the body of its MP Brij Bhushan Tiwari. Tiwari, who had taken oath as Rajya Sabha member on Tuesday, died of a cardiac arrest the next morning.

SP leader Mohan Singh’s remarks in Rajya Sabha on Friday triggered demands for a probe into the matter and a reference to the Privileges Committee.

The Delhi Police, however, claimed that it had not received any formal communication from Parliament or the SP,and, therefore, could not comment on the matter.

Raising the issue,Mohan Singh said,“On the night of April 24,while at his flat in Shalimar Bagh,Tiwari complained of a heart attack… The guard then dialled 100…. A police van took him to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital at 2 am. On April 25,I reached the hospital at 7 am. In an insensitive manner, the body was kept at the mortuary as an unclaimed body.”

“Within half an hour,UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also arrived at the hospital. We found the body lying among 20 such unclaimed bodies,” he said.

Singh, who became emotional while speaking, said the body was handed over only after an ACP arrived.

MPs from across parties demanded a probe. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla said,“The issue is serious… I will convey it to the Home Minister for a probe and strict action will be taken against the guilty.”
