71-year-old pedestrian killed in Delhi’s Greater Kailash after car hits multiple vehicles

The accused was identified as Tapan Ahir, 59. According to police, he has been working as a driver for the same vehicle owner since 1997. At the time of the accident, he was allegedly on his way to Kailash Colony Market to pick up his brother.

Police have booked Ahir for rash driving, act endangering life or personal safety of others and causing death by rash and negligent driving of vehicle.

Shashi was a retired Central Public Works Department official, while her husband is a former Punjab National Bank official.

Shashi’s niece, Charu, said that the couple had gone to a dentist in the morning. “When I came to the hospital, my uncle’s face was disfigured. My aunt is no more. And this happened not because they were speeding, or even driving. They were just walking..,” she said.

Police said the offending vehicle also damaged a Mahindra Thar, an auto-rickshaw and a cycle-rickshaw during the collisions.

As part of the investigation, police have seized the offending vehicle and are examining the exact sequence of the collisions.

A blood sample of the accused driver has also been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Investigators are also examining the statements of the injured pedestrian and other witnesses, besides assessing the damage caused to the vehicles involved.

Police said further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
