A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly carrying out a burglary in South Delhi’s Greater Kailash after using keywords on social media to know about people who leave town and gathering information about them before targeting their house, senior officers said on Sunday.

Officers identified the arrested accused as Aman Bagga and said they recovered jewellery and valuables worth around Rs 5 lakh from him. His co-accused, Sanjiv alias Fauzi, is on the run.

A senior police officer told The Indian Express, “In this case, Aman told us that the family posted about their Haridwar trip on social media and that he and Sanjiv used keywords on Facebook and Instagram, something that they usually do, to get information about people who have gone out of town… They did not know the family previously and stumbled upon their post.”

The officer added, “Following this, they figured out the family’s address and were aware that they would be possibly returning the same night… Eventually, after gathering enough information about the family and the house, they both committed the burglary.”

According to the police, on January 3 at around 11 am they received a PCR call regarding a theft at a house in Greater Kailash and a team immediately reached the spot. The complainant stated that his family had gone on a trip to Haridwar on January 2. When they returned that evening, they found that the house had been broken into and some items stolen. Wooden almirahs were tampered with and rooms ransacked.

The police began an investigation after lodging a case of robbery and scanned 250 CCTV cameras. The footage showed two suspicious men arriving on a motorcycle with a bag. Further probe and gathering of technical intelligence led the accused to be identified.

Bagga was traced to Zamrudpur and arrested on January 4. He came from Punjab four years ago and stayed at a flat in Lajpat Nagar where he met Sanjiv and the two started committing house thefts.
