The Delhi Police have arrested four friends of 20-year-old NRI Anmol Sarna on the charge of illegal possession of drugs. The night Anmol died,he and his friends snorted LSD,the police allege.
Party drugs may be easily available in the capital but the last time the Delhi Police seized LSD was in May 2008.
In the last five-and-half years,no unit of the Delhi Police has arrested anyone or recovered even a gram of LSD.
The now-defunct Narcotics department of the Delhi Police had,on May 20,2008,arrested a 37-year-old German national,Christian Fell, with 13 grams of LSD.
Fell is,at present, serving a 10-year sentence in Tihar jail after his conviction under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act.
Till late 2008,the Delhi Police had a separate Narcotics department with its own DCP and officers with expertise in fighting narcotic crimes. The officers of the department had to deal only with cases related to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
Housed in a separate building, there were at least 100 officers in the department. It was, however, disbanded afterwards. Since then, the Crime Branch has been dealing with cases related to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Most officers from the Narcotics department were transferred to the Crime Branch.
In the Anmol case, the police have alleged he,along with four friends, had bought LSD from a dealer in Noida for Rs 7,000. According to the police,Anmol, high on LSD,started behaving abnormally. He suffered a panic attack and turned violent. Among other things,he broke a LCD television. He also injured himself, police have claimed.
The Southeast district police, who are investigating the case, have taken into custody two of Anmols friends with whom he had been partying to find out from where they bought the LSD. On Wednesday, the police claimed to have traced the route allegedly taken by them to buy the drugs.
All types of party drugs are easily available in the capital. There has been a sharp rise in the use of ephedrine in the city. According to police, the use of ephedrine has almost doubled in the first nine months of this year compared to last year. So far this year, the police have recovered 705 kg ephedrine compared to 318 kg last year.
Another party drug methaqualone is also gaining popularity. Not on the polices radar till last year, the police have so far this year recovered 1.76 kg of the banned drug.
Till date this year,337 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act and 404 people arrested. Of those arrested,19 are Nigerian nationals, police said. More than half the drugs seized cocaine, ephedrine and methaqualone were from Nigerian nationals.
