The Punhana Crime Branch police early Wednesday morning arrested two men, including one that it deemed notorious and most wanted.

A Nuh Police spokesperson said both accused are from the district.

“Abid hails from Bichhor village while his accomplice, Zahid Hussain, is from Khaichtan village. They were apprehended during an operation at the Bichhor-Indana road. A Crime Branch team, led by Inspector Sandeep Mor, was conducting a special drive to curb criminal activities in the district. Acting on a tip-off that Abid and Zahid were planning to engage in cattle smuggling and were traveling on a motorcycle without a number plate, the team set up a checkpoint on Indana Road.”

Around 10 minutes into the operation, the suspects attempted to flee upon spotting the police, the spokesperson added. During the chase, their motorcycle skidded and fell.

“Seeing himself cornered, Abid opened fire on the police with an illegal pistol, with one bullet striking the bulletproof jacket of ASI Suraj. In self-defence, Inspector Sandeep Kumar returned fire, injuring Abid in the right leg. Zahid was apprehended after a brief chase.”

Abid was first rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Punhana, while Zahid was formally arrested. Abid was later admitted to the government medical college at Nalhar.

“Police records reveal Abid has over 12 cases against him in Bichhor, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, attack on police, cattle smuggling, Arms Act violations, robbery, and extortion. Key cases include a 2020 cattle smuggling and Arms Act case, a 2020 attack on police and rioting case, a 2022 POCSO Act and abduction case, multiple Arms Act cases in 2023, and a sensational murder case in January 2023. He is a member of an organised crime syndicate active in the Nuh-Mewat region, and had been absconding for a long time. Investigations into the gang’s activities have been initiated, and further questioning of the accused is underway,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (Punhana) Jitendra Kumar said.
