A day after Sneha Chaurasia, 21, a student of Shiv Nadar University, was shot dead inside the varsity campus in Greater Noida allegedly by a classmate who died by suicide later, the father of the deceased woman said he will file a police complaint against the university. Singh’s family, meanwhile, said they were unaware of the relationship between the two and that he was physically fit, contrary to the youth’s claim that he was suffering from brain cancer.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sneha’s father Raj Kumar Chaurasia said, “I was informed by the university that my child had gotten into an accident. I quickly left Kanpur and, upon reaching, came to know what had happened. The college said they will conduct an inquiry. How can you let a man roam around with a gun? Where is the security? It is a university, it is supposed to protect its students. They have these many guards, and the boy managed to shoot her, that too, twice.”

Chaurasia said his daughter had never spoken about Singh to the family. “I don’t know him. Our daughter spoke to us last around 12 pm (Thursday). We will pursue the case. We need to know how he got the gun.”

“We will file a complaint against the man (the accused) and the college authorities. The incident is happening right under their CCTV, how could they not know or check?” said Chaurasia who reached Noida Thursday and took his daughter’s body back to Kanpur for the last rites on Friday.

Kishan Chaurasia, Sneha’s uncle, said she was an athlete and a dancer: “She was very talented, would dance and was good at sports. She was the only child of her parents.”

Police said Anuj purportedly sent a video clip to the university authorities around 1.20 pm Thursday in which he claimed he was in a relationship with Sneha but they were no longer together. In the 23-minute video, he said he was “broken inside” and “could not trust anyone”, adding he had been “diagnosed with third-stage brain cancer” but had not told his parents. In the video sent out minutes before the crime, Anuj spoke about “punishing the woman” and sought the forgiveness of both their parents.

Meanwhile, Anuj’s family said they were unaware of the alleged relationship or that he was distressed, adding he had visited his home in UP’s Amroha 20 days ago. “He stayed for five days and seemed very normal. He told us he was planning to go to the US for higher studies and that the university was sending him abroad for a year. Apart from that, everything seemed fine. He had even joined us in farming activities,” said Anuj’s uncle Jaiveer Singh.

On Anuj’s statements regarding “brain cancer”, Singh said his nephew was physically fit and did not suffer from any ailment. “He was good at sports. If he had any illnesses, the symptoms would have shown. It is shocking he did this. We were informed that he was not well and on reaching here, we came to know of the suicide. Much later, we were told he shot a girl dead. We don’t know anything about how he got the gun. All his claims in the video about issues in the family are not true. In the video, he talks about his elder sister’s death. He only has a younger sister,” Singh added.

On reports that Sneha had earlier filed a harassment complaint against Anuj, Singh said the university should have informed the parents if “something was happening with the students”.
