Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday morning skipped the foundation stone laying ceremony and bhoomi pujan held for the new Police Headquarters on Parliament Street. He was told that there were inadequacies in documents regarding clearances for the project.
It (the building) has not been given its environmental and height clearances, among others. Home Ministry officials suggested I should not go there, Shinde said after cancelling his visit to the function on Jai Singh Marg.
Shinde was to perform the bhoomi pujan and the lay the foundation stone at 10.45 am on Friday. But,Delhi Police sources said that on Friday morning the Home Ministry informed them that the minister would not participate in the ceremony due to lack of clearances for the project.
The bhoomi pujan was finally performed by Gajendra Haldea, infrastructure advisor to the Deputy Chairman,Planning Commission.
After the function,Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and his designated successor B S Bassi left for North Block. The entire issue has been blown out of proportion. We had planned the bhoomi pujan and the foundation stone laying ceremony. The Home Minister had accepted the invitation to lay the foundation stone. But later,he refused to come. Someone in his ministry told him that it would not be right to go there since some of the project clearances were still awaited. To avoid any controversy, the minister said he would not come. I said well only do the bhoomi pujan. We wanted priests from four religions to attend the ceremony for success of the project, Kumar said.
