With the arrest of a 28-year-old sharpshooter who allegedly worked for gangster Chhota Shakeel, Delhi Police claimed it had foiled attempts on the life of Pakistan-born Canadian writer Tarek Fatah, a Tollywood celebrity and two businessmen based out of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
The accused, who was arrested on Tuesday night, has been identified as Naseem alias Rizwan, and was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000. Sources said his name surfaced during the questioning of one Junaid Chaudhary, arrested by the Special Cell in June this year. Junaid was arrested for conspiring in the murder of Fatah.
DCP (Northeast) A K Singla said a team, led by inspector Aishvir Singh, had received a tip-off that Naseem would come to Jafrabad and a trap was laid accordingly. A sophisticated pistol, four live cartridges and Rs 1.98 lakh in cash were seized from his possession, he said.
During questioning, he told police that after the arrest of Junaid, he went underground but was looking for an opportunity to eliminate Fatah. Police said that during this period, he met an eastern UP-based criminal, Jitender alias Munna Singh, through another criminal, Rashid, who was lodged in Bijnor jail. Munna offered him Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 40 lakh respectively to eliminate a Tollywood celebrity who lives in Andhra Pradesh and a Bijnor-based businessman, said sources.
A resident of New Mustafabad in northeast Delhi, Naseem came in contact with criminals in his area 10 years ago. He allegedly killed one Shaheed to gain dominance in the area. Later, he started committing robberies to earn a quick buck, sources said. Junaid allegedly got him in touch with Chhota Shakeel, who offered him money to commit crimes.
