A 38-year-old alleged gangster, who the police claimed worked as a sharpshooter for jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was shot dead in UP’s Hapur late Wednesday by the Delhi Police Special Cell and Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF).
According to the police, Naveen Kumar Kasana, a resident of Ghaziabad, was allegedly involved in the murder of a utensil trader in Delhi’s Farsh Bazaar area in December last year.
Kasana, the police said, was going from Dadri to Hapur to meet some of his gang members and carry out another extortion in North East Delhi.
“He was on his way to a location in Hapur to meet his accomplices,” an officer said.
Around 8 pm on Wednesday, Special Cell sleuths of Delhi Police got a whiff of Kasana’s movement from Dadri.
By 10 pm, a team led by ACP Hridaya Bhushan and ACP Rahul Vikram was on his tail. Kasana was carrying an automatic pistol, the police officer said.
Another officer said that Kasana, besides being a sharpshooter of the Bishnoi gang, worked for another jailed gangster, Hashim Baba.
“We asked him to stop, but he started firing back-to-back shots at us. Inspector Pankaj was hit on his bulletproof vest. We then fired back,” a police officer said.
“Around seven to eight bullets hit Kasana, and he fell off his bike. Two more members of the Special Cell, SI Akshay Tyagi and SI Vijender, got shot as well. A bullet hit the right side of the stomach of a Head Constable, Ankur, from UP STF as well,” the police officer said.
The operation, involving 25 to 30 policemen, took place near Kali Nahri Pul in Hapur.
In December 2024, Kasana, along with his associate Sachin alias Golu, shot a 52-year-old businessman, Sunil Jain, while he was on a morning walk near his house in the Farsh Bazaar area of Delhi’s Shahdara.
The police said Jain was murdered in a case of “mistaken identity”, as he had a similar physique and routine as that of the actual target.
In February, the Special Cell had arrested a sub-inspector (SI), Sukhbir, for allegedly sheltering Golu and Kasana and providing them with financial assistance.
The Special Cell team had also come close to nabbing another accused, Sachin Golu, in Jain’s murder. “We were tracking Golu and got his location near Hapur around 10 days ago. But he fled,” the police officer quoted above said.
Police said Golu and Kasana were financed by an alleged gambler and another Farsh Bazaar businessman who had asked SI Sukhbir to introduce the duo.
“He (the businessman) asked Sukhbir to introduce Kasana to Golu, and arrange the killing in Farsh Bazaar,” a police officer said.
