According to a police officer, Singh and his wife had gone to the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in the morning and then stopped for lunch at Karnataka Bhavan. The couple left Karnataka Bhavan at about 1:15 pm and were heading to their home in Hari Nagar when the accident occurred.

Police said the incident came to light when they received multiple calls pertaining to traffic jams between Dhaula Kuan and Delhi Cantonment area. “Three PCR calls regarding traffic jams from Dhaula Kuan towards Delhi Cantonment metro station road were received. Staff reached the spot and found one BMW car lying sideways, along with one motorcycle which was found near the divider of the road,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Amit Goel said.

“Eyewitnesses said a woman was driving the car, which hit the motorcycle. Due to the impact, the motorcycle hit a nearby road divider, and then a bus on the left. Thereafter, the BMW driver and her husband took the injured to a hospital in a taxi. Then a call was received from the hospital, saying one patient had died and another had sustained injuries,” DCP Goel said.

A police officer said Singh and his wife were taken to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, which is almost 17 kilometres from the accident site.

Speaking to mediapersons outside the hospital, Singh’s son, Navnoor Singh, said: “They were brought to this hospital, 22 kilometres away, which doesn’t make sense. If they had been taken to a nearby hospital, maybe my father would have been saved. My mother, too, has severe head injuries, although she was wearing a helmet. Her femur (thigh bone) is crushed.” He said his parents had left for the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara at about 11 am.

An official who knew Singh said he was scheduled to join the office after completing a training course at the Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow. He said Singh was due for a promotion next year. “He was a CSS (Central Secretariat Service) cadre officer. He underwent training at IIM-Lucknow just recently, and was to rejoin the office this week. He would have been promoted to the post of Director next year… He was a gentleman in the truest sense,” the official said.
