An 18-year-old girl was shot dead by a distant relative at her house in Budh Vihar in the Munirka area of South Delhi on Friday morning. The accused,Subhash, was arrested in the evening.

The girl’s family alleged that Subhash wanted to marry her and had been pestering her for five years. They said he had threatened to kill her and himself if the family objected to the match.

Sakshi was an only child and was a student at a government school in R K Puram.

Police said Subhash was known to the family,so he let himself in,bolted the door from inside and went to Sakshi’s bedroom.

Following a brief conversation,he allegedly shot at her from close range and left.

Sakshi’s aunt and her daughter-in-law told police that when they heard the gunshot, they came out of their room and tried to stop Subhash. But he locked them from outside and fled on his motorcycle.

“I went to Sakshi’s house, where I found her aunt crying. I also saw the accused flee on a motorcycle,” Brijesh said.

Sakshi was taken to Safdarjung Hospital where she was declared dead.

Sakshi’s father Pritam Singh said,“My wife and I were at work at the time of the incident. Subhash had been stalking my daughter for the last five years and wanted to marry her. He had threatened to kill Sakshi and himself,if we objected.”

“Six months ago, when he came home to meet Sakshi,I told him to stay away from her. Sakshi too refused to marry him. At that time,he agreed. I do not know if he visited her behind my back,” Singh said.

A senior police officer said,“There is a possibility that Sakshi had been in touch with the accused and probably had an argument over his marriage proposal. She refused to marry him, which made him kill her”.
