The Supreme Court will on Monday hear a petition that has sought to restrain the government from taking steps to remove former Supreme Co-urt judge A K Ganguly as Chairman of West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) in the wake of the sexual harassment allegations by a lawyer. The matter was mentioned before a Bench led by Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam,which agreed to hear it on January 6.
The plea has been filed by Delhi-based doctor M Padma Narayan Singh,who has sought quashing of the complaint on which a three-judge panel of apex court had indicted Ganguly for prima facie unwelcome sexual behaviour against the lawyer,who was at the relevant time interning with him.
The petition alleged that Ganguly had become a victim of conspiracy since he,as an arbitrator,had decided a matter between a prominent football club of Kolkata and All India Football Federation in which the intern had participated. Singh has named Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaising as one of the respondents in the plea,accusing her of working relentlessly to get Justice Ganguly arrested unlawfully.

Supporting Justice (retd) A K Ganguly,accused of sexually harassing an intern,former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir Friday said he had the right of not stepping down as chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission. “He has the right to do so. I will not say anything more,” Kabir said. The former CJI refused to elaborate on the matter saying it would not be appropriate on his part to comment further as the matter would now go to the Supreme Court after the union cabinet cleared the demand for Presidential reference. Asked whether the victim should file an FIR,he said,“That is what everybody is saying.”
