Owing to work remaining on a 200-metre-long loop on the Ashram flyover extension, which is from Sarai Kale Khan to South and Southeast Delhi, commuters are left battling traffic jams.

The loop — work on which was supposed to be completed by the first week of June — provides connectivity from Sarai Kale Khan for those going towards Lajpat Nagar and parts of South and Southeast Delhi, including those coming from Ghaziabad and Noida.

The Ashram flyover extension has six lanes and two ramps — one goes towards Sarai Kale Khan and the other goes upward onto the flyover from the Ring Road side.

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Atishi had said last month that the under-construction loop will be completed within a week.

During a visit to the spot, it was found that the ramp work was almost completed, but the bituminous layer on the surface of the approach road was not laid. Construction material was found at the spot but no work was ongoing. The side wall was also erected but the stretch was barricaded with concrete blocks.

A PWD official said, “The work is slightly delayed but is has not stopped. It is barricaded for doing black-top work. It will be completed by the end of this week.”

Once work on the loop is completed, the Ashram flyover will be signal-free, and it will also ease traffic movement on the Ring Road.

The incomplete portion also affects commuters travelling from ITO, Noida, Ghaziabad and the northern parts of the city, as they have to take the Maharani Bagh stretch to reach South Delhi. This also leads to heavy congestion on Ring Road.
