BJP’s Chetan Chauhan banks on anti-incumbency factor and ‘lack of development’ to stump Dikshit junior

The battle lines were neatly drawn out in the East Delhi constituency on Monday with both Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit and BJP candidate Chetan Chauhan filing their nominations for the Lok Sabha elections.

The BSP’s Haji Yunus, the other major player from this constituency, will file his nomination on Wednesday.

Sandeep Dikshit, sitting MP from the constituency, reached the Geeta Colony office early on Monday morning to submit his documents. He was accompanied by the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president,J P Aggarwal,MLA from Laxmi Nagar A K Walia,MLA from Gandhi Nagar Arvinder Singh Lovely, and his lawyer.

The crowds jostled with security guards and cries of “Sheila Dikshit zindabad” could be heard all around. The chief minister, however, chose to accompany Krishna Tirath, the Congress candidate from Northwest Delhi, who also filed her nomination on Monday.

“The major issue in this election will be development and I am 100 per cent sure that not only will the people of Delhi vote me back to power but all seven seats will be swept away by the Congress. It will be like a wave,” Dikshit said.

However,as far as confidence goes,Chetan Chauhan is not too far behind. Having already declared that Sandeep Dikshit is a dummy candidate, his real challenger being his mother,Sheila Dikshit,Chauhan said,“I am certain the people of East Delhi want change and will, therefore, vote for me.”

Chauhan said he is counting on three major factors to propel him to victory – “Anti-incumbency,an impetus to development, and the fact that I am a sportsperson.” The last one may leave people perplexed but Chauhan is certain it is enough to bowl over his opponents.

Meanwhile, the BSP’s Haji Yunus is busy getting his papers in order for filing of nomination. Ask him on what issues he is fighting this election and the answer is a very brief — “The same issues as my party”. The BSP is likely to garner a chunk of the votes that would have either gone to Dikshit or Chauhan.

In the 10 Assembly constituencies that fall in East Delhi, eight have sitting Congress MLAs,while two have BJP MLAs. However,in the last election from this constituency, the BSP’s share of the votes was 12.13 per cent. This is expected to rise to at least 15 per cent this time.
