Extradited gangster Abu Salem could not be produced at three different courts in Delhi on Monday due to illness, prompting the presiding officers to issue fresh production warrants against him.
Two judges at Patiala House courts issued the production warrant against Salem for January 20 while Chief Metropolitan Magistrate sought his presence before the Tis Hazari court on January 28.
On December 15,a city court had framed charges against the underworld don for allegedly making extortion calls to three Delhi-based businessmen in 1998. The matter was fixed for today for recording of evidence. Sources said a message was received from Mumbais Arthur Road Jail, where Salem is lodged, saying he could not be sent to Delhi due to illness. The disease was not specified in the message.
Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005 to face trial in various cases including the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. The court of CMM,where the accused is being tried along with others for making extortion calls to a city businessman in 2002,has already started recording statement of witnesses.
The underworld don was also to be produced today at a special court in a MCOCA case.
