Political parties are yet to finalise candidates for the upcoming municipal polls, but the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has drawn a list of things needed to hold the elections.

On its extensive shopping list are items like furniture, shamianas, glass tumblers and earthen pitchers. These, the MCD says, will be of essential use to the municipal officers manning poll booths.

Now,the civic agency is looking for bidders who will provide the “necessary items”. With nearly 12,044 polling booths in 12 zones of Delhi, the MCD will have to spend quite a bit.

Each polling booth will have two earthen pitchers. The MCD,therefore, will call bids for 24,088 earthen pots. For this, the earnest money for each zone is Rs 10,000.

“Polling arrangements are important. Regulations and codes are finalised by the State Election Commission, but we have to guard the needs of officers who will be involved in the election process,” a senior official said.

“What good are earthen pots without glasses?” asked the official. So,the corporation will invite bids for 48,176 glass tumblers of “good quality”.

Each polling booth will have four glass tumblers. “We need tumblers when we are providing earthen pitchers. It will be hot,and people will need drinking water. This is a basic facility which we will provide for conduct of elections,” the official said.

As part of seating arrangements, the MCD plans to get at least 1.32 lakh chairs,36,132 small tables, and 12,044 medium and large size tables.

Tents, curtains and pedestal fans will be supplied as per requirement.’

“We are zeroing in on the basic things we need for those who will be involved in conducting the elections. We will call tenders and the lowest bidder will be given the contract,” said Yogendra Mann,Director of Press and Information.

The sealed tenders will be received in the office of the election officer,MCD,on March 12.
