The Delhi Police arrested two persons and recovered 1,000 kg of the psychotropic substance,ephedrine,worth Rs 20 crore. Ephedrine is a key ingredient for the manufacture of amphetamine stimulants,such as the ecstasy drug.
On April 1,police received information that a syndicate involved in trafficking such substances from Manipur into Myanmar and China was active in the city. Acting on a tipoff on June 3,police arrested one Ram Naresh from Sitapuri when he returned from Imphal after a meeting one of the kingpins of the syndicate. Arun Kampani,DCP (Special Cell) said,250 kg of endephrine was recovered from his possession.
During the interrogation,Ram Naresh named one Umesh Mehra as an accomplice. We apprehended Mehra and a total of 750 kg of banned substances was recovered from a warehouse in Gurgaon, said Kampani.
Further investigations revealed that the two had earlier been convicted under the Drug Control Act in 2003 and were imprisoned for two,along with being fined Rs 50,000.
The accused were produced at a special court in Saket and taken in police remand for four days.
