Roof of group housing society in Patparganj collapses,1 dead

The roof of a seven-storey building in East Delhi’s Patparganj collapsed on Sunday,killing a 40-year-old share trader.

The roof of a seven-storey building in East Delhi’s Patparganj collapsed on Sunday evening,killing a 40-year-old share trader and injuring three others.

Police said the roof of the house on the seventh floor was undergoing repair work. A case of causing death by negligence has been registered against unknown persons.

Police said the incident was reported around 6.45 pm from flat No. C 701 of Prince Cooperative Group Housing Society. The share trader was identified as Vikas Kohli,a resident of Indirapuram.

According to police,the flat belongs to 50-year-old Naresh Dua,a general manager with a private firm. Police said around 6.30 pm,Dua,his wife Nidhi (45),his 75-year-old mother-in-law Shyamala Kohli and Shyamala’s son Vikas were sitting in the drawing room when the roof suddenly caved in.

Following a PCR call,the four were rushed to Max Hospital in Patparganj,where Kohli was declared brought dead.

Director (information and publicity),MCD,Yogendra Mann said,“The incident has been reported from a private apartment inside a private society. There was no unauthorised construction. But we have found that a lot of building material was stored on the terrace and the roof collapsed under its weight.”

Sources said the families living on the remaining six floors had been asked to vacate the premises.

One of the residents M Bhattacharjee said,“Repair work of the building is the responsibility of the society. However,the occupants of the top floor were conducting repairs on their own. The portion of the terrace which was directly on top of the living room collapsed.”

Police said a case under Sections 288 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down or repairing buildings),337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) and 304 (a) (causing death by negligence) has been registered.
