A new restaurant brings thin crust pizzas and more to Vasant Kunj

Till now, residents of Vasant Kunj had to look towards Gurgaon and Saket for fancy dining experience. The drive is set to get shorter with the twin DLF malls in Vasant Kunj — DLF Place and Emporio—steadily filling up with new eateries.

The first to open its doors is Italia,a standalone restaurant set up by The Park hotel. The restaurant is a branch of the hotel’s popular outlet in Bangalore. The 164-cover Italia occupies a second floor airy space and seamlessly threads together a tony cafe,a formal dining area and a sun-soaked terrace.

The formal sitting area is done up in gold and black. A smartly lit bar counter stands in the centre, though you’ll have to wait till the eatery gets its liquor license. The café is a jovial burst of colours like orange and yellow.

Must Try

We began with Frito misto of seafood (Rs 495) that fetches an eclectic mix of calamari rings and sticks of several fillets that are served with a superbly tangy horseradish sauce. Not truly an Italian accompaniment,it goes well with the mild flavours of the sea. A hearty summery salad is Pears & walnut salad (Rs 325) that fetches several thin slices of the fruits and chunks of fresh walnut in a robust gorgonzola dressing. Another refreshing starter is baked asparagus (Rs 395). A simple dish brings in several sticks of asparagus blanketed with a golden crust of parmesan. Among soups,we pick Minestrone Genovese (Rs 195) over Broccoli and pancetta soup (Rs 195). While both are delicious, minestrone is juicy and generously studded with freshly chopped vegetables.

Pizzas need a special mention. The paper thin base is well made and the pizza with onion & Parma ham (Rs 575) offers a refreshing shift from the ketchupy fare on offer elsewhere. Asparagus,Artichoke,Pecorino and Cherry tomato Piadine (Rs 535) is equally delicious.

Among entrées our favourite is Fillet of John Dory (Rs 675). Several slices of fish are nestled on a bed of spinach and accompanied with balsamic sauce. The tangy balsamic enhances the subtle flavours of the fish and spinach.

Wrap it up with the delicious dessert. We tried tiramisu and the chocolate and grand manier pot and came away impressed.

Give a miss

Wild mushroom risotto and braised lamb shanks are great entrées but opt for them only if you love dishes a bit undone.
