4 dead, 3 injured as fire breaks out in building that housed manufacturing units in Delhi’s Rohini

The Delhi Police said the injured include the son of the man who owned the four-storeyed building near Rithala Metro station.

At least four people died and three others were injured after a building housing three separate plastic item manufacturing units caught fire in the Rithala area of Rohini Tuesday, the Delhi Police said on Wednesday. The blaze was doused by Wednesday morning.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit, as per preliminary reports. A statement from the police said the owner of the building is Suresh Bansal, and his son Nitin Bansal, 31, ran a factory on the ground and first floors. Nitin is among the injured.

According to an officer with the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a call regarding the fire was received at 7.30 pm on Tuesday. ā€œThe blaze was at a four-storey building near Rithala Metro station in Rohini Sector 5. At least 16 fire tenders were pressed into service,ā€ the officer said.

At about 1.30 am, three charred bodies were recovered from inside the premises after the fire was brought under control early on Wednesday, the police said. Later, one more charred body was retrieved. The bodies are yet to be identified.

Besides Nitin, the other two injured have been identified as Rakesh, 30, and Virender, 25. While Rakesh has sustained 80 per cent burn injuries, Virender has minor burns. They were all taken to Dr BSA Hospital for treatment, officers said, adding that doctors later referred Nitin and Rakesh to RML Hospital.

Another police officer said the blaze quickly spread throughout the building. The rescue team had to use cranes to demolish part of the structure to extinguish the flames. ā€œItems such as bags, garments, and glassware were being manufactured in the units,ā€ the officer added.

ā€œThe second floor was rented out to one Anand, who did some fabric work. The third and top floors were used as a godown and were rented out to Rakesh Arora, who made disposable articles,ā€ the police statement said.

By 6 am, the fire was controlled on the ground, first, and second floors. The operation later continued till the blaze was completely doused, an officer added.
