A huge portion of a road in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area caved in Wednesday after a sewer line was damaged and burst, causing traffic jams. According to officials, no injuries have been reported.
After the Janakpuri cave-in was reported, police barricaded the road and authorities started repair work on the stretch.
A Public Works Department official said, “The road is ours but the road caved in because of the pipeline leakage. Two pipelines of the Delhi Jal Board pass through this stretch, a water pipeline and a sewer line. We observed that the sewer line was leaking and bubbling for some time and this was the reason for the cave-in.”
“As there was no way for the water to be released, the pipeline burst. We have informed DJB and it is currently rectifying the issue. Once they give us the clearance that the sewer line is completely fixed, PWD will repair the huge hole that has developed on the road,” added the official.
The traffic police took to Twitter to inform citizens about the incident. “Road has caved-in near Possangipur park due to which traffic is restricted in both carriageways from Joginder Singh Marg towards Possangipur Village and vice-versa..,” it tweeted.
A portion of a road also caved in the Najafgarh area in the morning and a crane got trapped. Police said the road at Dichaon Enclave was sealed and traffic police deployed. Traffic police said it received information about congestion from Janakpuri’s Pankha Road and on road coming from Mangolpuri towards Janakpuri.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva hit out at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the incident. “Three caves took place in one day… the incident has exposed the CM’s fake promises of making Delhi roads into European roads,” he said.
