Police on Wednesday arrested one more youth for the violence in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri last week, identifying him from a cellphone video. Police claimed the Muslim youth is seen pelting stones and inciting violence in the video.
Police have so far arrested 51 people for the clashes that left at least 13 people injured, eight of them with bullet wounds.
Several of the alleged rioters were identified by police from videos shot on cellphones. Police said they were examining more videos and that they had “strong evidence” against the alleged rioters.
“More arrests are likely in the coming days,” an officer said.
Police have also prepared a list of people with a criminal past to investigate their roles, if any, in the violence. “We have drawn up a list of proclaimed offenders to ascertain if they played a role in the violence. We want to identify the people who used illegal firearms during the violence,” the officer said.
Police on Tuesday had arrested six persons for their alleged involvement in the violence.
Four days after clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the area, heavy police deployment continued in all blocks of Trilokpuri.
For the first time since violence erupted, prohibitory orders were relaxed for over six hours, allowing shops to open and people to step out. “Curfew would be relaxed for six hours on Thursday also,” the officer said.
Police on Wednesday continued with their door-to-door search in six blocks, seizing sackful of bricks and bottles. No firearms were found.
“We plan to continue the door-to-door search for the next three-four days till all the blocks are covered. Even though we relaxed prohibitory orders for an extended period today, we are monitoring the situation. Deployment in the area will remain till further orders,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Kumar said.
During Tuesday’s door-to-door search involving more than 2,000 police personnel, more than 500 bricks, 70 sacks of broken bricks and stones, three sacks of glass bottles and at least 70 weapons, including spades and knives, were recovered. The police’s drone is also keeping an eye on the area.
