The Delhi Boat Club on Bela Road is all but hidden from view by boards put up by the Delhi Metro construction crew.
The club, situated on the Yamuna banks, witnesses a buzz of activity during the monsoon when the Yamuna is in spate. The club will soon undergo a renovation to deal with problems of flooding.
The Delhi tourism department has floated tenders to hire a consultant for carrying out the renovation work.
There is no place for docking boats there. We have floated tenders to appoint a consultant for carrying out the renovation work. We also plan to purchase more boats. The consultant will advise us on the type and number of boats needed, a Delhi Tourism official said.
The renovation is expected to be completed ahead of the monsoon next year.
At present, the club has 62 boats, which are also used for rescue operations on the Yamuna.
Delhi Tourism, meanwhile, has opened one of Delhis oldest boat clubs located near Krishi Bhawan in July this year. The Krishi Bhawan boat club was opened after the one near India Gate was shut due to security reasons in April.
Thirty-nine boats were shifted there from India Gate in July. We also plan to acquire 35 paddle and rowing boats, the official said.
We had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Central Public Works Department for operating the boat club near India Gate but it had to be discontinued and the CPWD gave us permission to revive the boat club near Krishi Bhawan, the official said.
