A retired Indian Foreign Services (IFS) officer committed suicide allegedly by shooting himself in the head at his residence in South Delhi’s Shanti Niketan area on Wednesday afternoon.
No suicide note was recovered from the house, police said. Rakesh Shankar (62), who had taken voluntary retirement four years ago, was working as Pro-Vice Chancellor of Galgotia University in Greater Noida and was also a visiting lecturer in many prominent universities across the country.
According to police, the 1979-batch officer was undergoing treatment for some ailment and was discharged from Fortis hospital on Wednesday morning. Shankar’s family told police that the incident came as a shock as he had no reason to be depressed.
“On Wednesday afternoon, all his family members were home when suddenly, his son heard a gun shot from Shankar’s room. He rushed to the room and found his father lying in a pool of blood. The son rushed him to the hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.
Subsequently, police were informed,” a senior officer said. According to police, Shankar shot himself with a .32 bore pistol. The weapon was recovered from his room. “Shankar shot himself with a licensed pistol. We have sent the body for a post-mortem examination. The bullet reportedly pierced the skull and caused immediate death,” the officer said.
Though police do not suspect any foul play in the matter, an inquiry has been initiated. Police will question a list of people, including Shankar’s family members and colleagues, to ascertain why he took the extreme step. Shankar’s last posting before his retirement was in the United Arab Emirates.
