The East Municipal Corporation on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that it had been unable to complete a survey of the alleged illegal polluting factories in Gandhi Nagar and Geeta Colony areas due to stiff resistance from the residents.

“1,335 units have been surveyed, and over 350 have been found to be polluting illegal factories. However, the verification of the remaining is yet to be done” the counsel for the MCD told a bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath during a hearing on a PIL related to illegal polluting industries in East Delhi.

The municipal corporation informed the court that an administrative officer, who had gone to survey the area, had been “manhandled” by the residents.

The High Court had in January directed the civic agency to complete a survey of the area and submit a report on the polluting industries operating illegally on a plea filed by a group of residents from Gandhi Nagar.

One of the petitioners,M K Kashyap had also filed a plea stating that he and his family were under threat from industry owners.

“We are being threatened, and have on more than one occasion been manhandled by them,we have made several police complaints,” Kashyap’s lawyer K K Sharma said. He claimed that the family had not received any police protection.

The court summoned the DCP (East) on May 29 to reply to the plea for protection. The civic agency has also been directed to file its status report by the same date.
