The deafening sound of the 2.4-litre engine roaring to life had the crowds at Rajpath cheering. And what must have been a moment anticipated by many for weeks now,passed by in a blink of an eye.
The Formula 1 car RB7,flaunted its power,and of course its speed,on the 1-km stretch between Rashtrapati Bhawan and India Gate on Saturday afternoon during the Red Bull speed street event.
As young Daniel Ricciardo strapped himself in the driver’s seat and put the racing car into motion,thousands of F1 aficionados,who had come from across the city and neighbouring Haryana,began to cheer.
“We have just displayed a showcar at Rajpath with an V8 engine. The cars in the race have a V10 engine and are even faster and stronger. Their speed can go from 0 to 380 in no time,” said Supratik Sen,Red Bull’s head of sports and events in India.
“People in India have shown great interest and I hope this sport does well,” he said.
Though the crowd was cheering at its loudest best for the Red Bull Racing team,leader in both the drivers and constructors championships in the ongoing 2011 Grand Prix,the collective sound was easily drowned by the RB7.
“The sound (of the car) is superb. The car went with jet speed. It is great that India will be on the F1 map. I have been watching it on television for years,but nothing comes close to this. I was just stunned by the noise,” said Anna,a spectator.
Another spectator,Utsav Raj from Gurgaon,said,“It is like a dream come true. I have just seen F1 cars on television. To see one speeding in front of your eyes is amazing. The car looks superb.”
The event also included a performance by Indian Ocean. It was organised in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism and Confederation of Indian Industries.
