JNU student held for raping classmate at party in December, say Delhi police Police said the woman approached them along with a few persons from the college administration.

A 23-year-old JNU student was arrested Thursday for allegedly raping a woman classmate, said police. According to police, the accused forced himself upon the woman during a party at his house last year in December. However, the woman approached the college administration with her complaint only in March.

Both the complainant and the accused are pursuing MA from the Centre for Historical Studies.

Police said the woman approached them along with a few persons from the college administration. A case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station and the woman was sent for a medical examination, said an officer.

“After the woman got drunk, the accused allegedly forced himself upon her. She took some time to come forward with her complaint and inform college authorities. On Thursday, the woman approached police and the accused was immediately arrested,” he said.

Sources in the college said the woman had approached the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) after the incident.

“The GSCASH received the complaint from the concerned student at the end of March, after which the committee took two weeks to establish prima facie evidence against the accused. The woman was sent to the administration to file her complaint which was later forwarded to police,” said a source.

A university official said, “We submitted the GSCASH report to police. The girl was not ready to file a case earlier so it took us some time to submit the report.”
