Rajbala’s husband turns down relief

The husband of the only person to die of injuries sustained in the police crackdown at Ramlila Maidan last year said on Thursday that he is satisfied with the Supreme Court verdict.

The husband of the only person to die of injuries sustained in the police crackdown at Ramlila Maidan last year said on Thursday that he is satisfied with the Supreme Court verdict.

Rajbala’s husband Jagbeer Mullick, however, turned down the award of Rs 5 lakh compensation, saying the money is of no use since his “entire family has been devastated”.

“We are satisfied with the Supreme Court’s verdict. The court has taken the decision after considering all aspects,” he said.

The Supreme Court has directed the Delhi Police and Baba Ramdev Trust to share the compensation amount to be paid to Rajbala’s family — 75 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively. Police have to pay Rs 3.75 lakh and the Trust has to give Rs 1.25 lakh.

He said he does not want the compensation, but if his family asks him to accept it,he would not take any money from the Ramdev Trust.

“Asking Baba Ramdev’s Trust to pay is wrong, according to me. He was conducting the protest peacefully. When the person is gone, what will we do with the money?” Mullick asked.

He blamed the police and the Delhi government for the incident. “Although both the government and Delhi Police are to be blamed,I think Delhi Police is more at fault. If they had got such orders, they could have carried them out during the day. There was no point in taking such extreme action during the night. Both are hand in glove,” Mullick said.
