Gurugram DCP (Traffic) Virender Vij Monday said the police have not targeted anyone but issued challans to “vehicles based on lane-driving compliance.”
The statement came after it was alleged by several quarters that the Haryana traffic police targeted Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) buses over the last two days in the wake of a purported video of a Haryana policewoman on an RSRTC bus going viral.
In the video, the Haryana policewoman, face covered with a dupatta, can be seen traveling on an RSRTC bus to Dharuhera in Haryana. She refuses to pay the bus fare of Rs 50 and engages in an argument with the conductor claiming she is not required to pay the fare. The bus is then stopped and other passengers can be heard asking her to pay the amount. The video ends abruptly and it is not clear how the argument was resolved.
Amid the row, the Gurugram traffic police said they have issued challans to 3,600 vehicles for lane-driving non-compliance, of which only 11 are RSRTC buses.
“We have also issued challans to over 150 Haryana Roadways buses and 41 Delhi government buses. Apart from this, 55 school buses and… over 100 buses from other states have also been fined,” the DCP said, defending the actions of the Haryana Police.
