A molestation complaint led to the arrest of a man impersonating as Medical Superintendent,MBBS (Orthopaedics) from AIIMS,who lured many people, most of them foreign tourists, with the promise of good treatment and duped them of lakhs of rupees.
According to police, the accused, identified as R K Gupta, failed the final examination for a degree in Orthopaedics at AIIMS in 2001. He left the campus with a promise he would return as a doctor.
The tools of his trade were authentic-looking visiting cards and stamps of Dr R K Gupta,Orthopaedic Surgeon (AIIMS). He would tell people that he also ran a healthcare NGO called Holistic Healthcare Pvt Ltd,police said.
Additional DCP (Southeast) Gaurav Sharma said: He targeted foreign tourists suffering from chronic diseases and told them that he would facilitate treatment for them at AIIMS. He took lakhs of rupees from them for this purpose.
Police said they found out about Guptas racket after a 20-year-old woman, employed as an executive assistant with his company, alleged that Gupta molested her. The woman told police that Gupta hired her to assist him with administrative work and took her to Jaipur for a business trip.
The woman reportedly left for Jaipur on February 24 with him and two other staff members. She was taken to Jaipur for official work, but the accused tried to force himself on her in a hotel room. The woman spurned his advances and left for Delhi that night. A case of molestation was registered, an officer said.
When police contacted the two staff members who had accompanied Gupta, they revealed that they were investors in Guptas health centre project and not staff members. During questioning, the two men told police that Gupta had issued them a cheque of Rs 19 crore as advance payment for the land he was to buy in Jaipur. The police later found that Guptas account balance was Rs 57.
Soon after the incident was reported,Gupta fled to Dubai. According to sources, police asked the two investors to call Gupta and tell him that the woman had registered a case of molestation against him,and that they would help him avoid arrest. Gupta returned and met the investors in Agra. When they were on their way to Delhi,he found out that the duo had helped police lay a trap. He then made a PCR call alleging that the two investors were kidnapping him. The UP police arrested the two investors and Gupta escaped again, a police source said.
Delhi Police then contacted the UP Police, and Gupta was arrested from Noida, he said.
Gupta revealed that he had cheated many people on the pretext of facilitating better treatment of chronic diseases at AIIMS. His interrogation also revealed that he had duped as many as 20 farmers in Jaipur by giving them advance cheques for crores of rupees for acquiring their land to set up a health centre, Additional DCP (Southeast) Gaurav Sharma said.
Gupta is a BSc graduate from Meerut University and has a diploma in Physiotherapy from AIIMS. Police are trying to ascertain if the accused has a criminal record. Investigation is underway.
