Police on Sunday arrested a 42-year-old property dealer for allegedly kidnapping an 11-year-old son of a businessman,and demanding a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore

Police on Sunday arrested a 42-year-old property dealer for allegedly kidnapping an 11-year-old son of a businessman,and demanding a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Alok Kumar said the accused Harpal Singh Sodhi was arrested and the boy was rescued within 12-hours of the kidnapping.

The other accused,Harpreet,the father of the boy’s classmate and a property dealer,is on the run,police said. A Maruti Swift that was used in the crime has also been recovered,police said.

“On Saturday,the boy,Harneet,who lives in Ranjinder Nagar,had gone to a nearby shop to get his father’s mobile phone recharged,when he was allegedly kidnapped. At 6.41 pm,the complainant received a ransom call from an unknown number,with the caller demanding Rs 1.5 crore for the boy’s release,” Kumar said.

Investigation revealed that Harpreet used to meet his friend Harpal Singh Sodhi at his office in Rajkot in Bhiwadi,Rajasthan. When the call detail records of the phone numbers from which the ransom call were accessed,the location of the person who made the calls was found to be near Bhiwadi.

“The team stationed near Bhiwadi traced the office and apprehended Harpal,who admitted to having made ransom calls. The child was also rescued from Rewari railway station,25 km from Bhiwadi,” Kumar said. However the Harpreet managed to escape.

Police said Harpreet,along with Harpal,had hatched a plan to kidnap the affluent businessman’s son. He even devised an alibi.

“A week before the incident Harpreet contacted Harneet’s parents regarding the purchase of a shop,” Kumar said. When Harpreet’s family was questioned after the kidnapping,they told police that he had gone to Delhi to arrange for the money to buy the shop,Kumar said.
