One of the three main suspects in the shooting incident in Gurgaon’s busy MG Road, where unidentified gunmen had opened fire on a SUV on July 15, have been arrested, according to the city police.
The arrested accused, Harendra alias Laala, had coordinated and executed the attack on Rakesh Hayatpur, said the police. Hayatpur, who was in the SUV and was on his way to a hearing in a murder trial in which he was the prime suspect, had escaped unhurt. But an auto-rickshaw driver at the site was killed when he was hit by a stray bullet.
Harendra, who allegedly hired the gunmen to kill Hayatpur, was presented in the city court on Friday and later sent to police custody for two days.

During questioning, Harendra reportedly told the police that his uncle Narendra and his associate Kapil had targetted Hayatpur as he had duped the duo over a property deal. He reportedly told the police that Narendra, along with another nephew Sandeep alias Dabbu, who is currently lodged in Bhondsi Central Jail, had put together a plan to kill Hayatpur.
Harendra allegedly got involved in the plan to eliminate Hayatpur after Kapil got arrested a day before the incident, on charges of possessing illegal arms.
After the investigators realised that the attack had been planned from inside Bhondsi Jail, prison authorities carried out raids and recovered 11 mobile phones from the convicts.
According to the police, Sandeep asked his uncle and Kapil to meet Bishambar, another suspect, who provided the gunmen and supplied weapons. Narendra and Kapil had paid Bishambar Rs 15 lakh to kill Hayatpur, said the police.
“However, Kapil got arrested a day before the attack for illegal possession of three pistols, one carbine and bullets. After Kapil’s arrest, Harendra was roped at the eleventh hour as he was assigned to point out Rakesh’s movement to the shooters at the crime scene,” said an official.
The four unidentified gunmen who unleashed a hail of bullets on Hayatpur, as well as Narendra and Bishambar, are still absconding.
