A 30-year-old assistant section officer (ASO) with the Ministry of Defence was found dead at her home in Delhi’s Dwarka area on Friday, the police said. Her family has alleged that her husband and in-laws had been harassing her.

Nazia Khanam was three months pregnant, a senior police officer said. The Delhi Police said a case was registered under charges of cruelty by a husband or relative and abetment of suicide.

A Delhi Police officer said they received a call reporting an alleged suicide at 4.21 pm on August 21 and sent a team to the woman’s home in the Bharthal village. “The police team reached the spot soon after the call. The body was taken into police possession, and the sub-divisional magistrate concerned was informed. It was later shifted to the DDU Hospital mortuary as per procedure,” the officer said.

Nazia’s parents subsequently approached the SDM with a complaint alleging wrongdoing by her husband and other members of her matrimonial family, following which police registered a case, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Kushalpal Singh said Nazia’s family members appeared before the executive magistrate on August 21 and recorded their statements but did not initially raise suspicion or make allegations against her husband or other members of her matrimonial family.

The following day, her parents returned to the SDM with a fresh statement and complaint alleging harassment by her husband and other members of the family, Singh said.

“Based on their statement and the facts disclosed therein, the FIR was registered at the Sector 23 police station in Dwarka,” Singh said.

The police said Nazia married Mohd Azam Ali Khan on April 11 this year according to Muslim rites and customs. An investigation is underway, and further action will be based on evidence and facts that emerge during the probe, the police said.
