Police said the two-storey building houses a garment factory. “There was some repair work going on inside the building when it collapsed,” the officer added.

A call about the incident was received at 12.51 pm and five fire tenders rushed to the spot, said Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials. Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were also roped in to aid with rescue efforts.

Police said the victims were Mukesh (45), Vinod (50) and Phoolwati (45). The injured – Thakurdas (55), Nirmala (45), Hari Shankar (18) and Jasim (33) – were taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital for treatment.

On the collapse, a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) spokesperson said: “Junior Engineers and Assistant Engineers of wards 16 and 17, along with machinery, have been deputed for removal of malba (debris) and other assistance as per requirement.”

The spokespersons also said the industrial estate was developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and has not been handed over to the MCD for repair of roads and drains to date.

A DDA spokesperson responded to the allegation saying, “In the brochure of Housing Scheme 2019, it was mentioned that day-to-day maintenance — including maintenance of green areas, cleanliness of campus/housing pocket/society, replacement of light fitting in common areas, maintenance and operation of lifts, payment of electricity bill of common areas etc — will be the responsibility of RWAs concerned.”

They added, “The DDA handed over cleaning and sweeping work to the RWA concerned in June 2023. Despite numerous letters to the MCD from the DDA to take over roads and parking, no response was received to date, though the MCD is collecting property tax.”
