Police on Wednesday claimed that misinformation led to the commotion in Shaheen Bagh,Southeast Delhi,a day after clashes broke out over the alleged arrest of the nephew of journalist Syed Mohammed Kazmi, who is in custody in connection with the Israeli Embassy car bombing in February.
The residents alleged that Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) or Special Cell personnel in plainclothes had gone to the area in unmarked cars and picked up Kazmis nephew Hassan Ahmed,a Class XI student, for questioning, police said.
The locals had some misinformation about the team of officers who went to Shaheen Bagh. The team was not from the ATS or Special Cell, but from the Anti Auto Theft Squad of Southeast district. They were there to arrest a thief following a tip-off, an officer said.
The team had traced a doctors stolen mobile phone and had gone to detain the accused,he said.
The team arrested a youth named Javed in the afternoon. Javed later told the team that two of his friends,Hassan and Riyaz, were also involved in the theft. When the officers caught hold of Hassan,he started shouting for help. Soon after, locals surrounded the police team and assaulted three men from the team, the police officer said.
But Kazmis son,Shauzab, insisted that the team went to Shaheen Bagh with the intention of detaining Hassan Ahmed.
