The Crime Branch busted a land-grab racket being run from Tihar jail and arrested two persons of the Sandeep Mental gang. Police said the two were terrorising owners of a plot to vacate it.

“Around 8 pm on December 13, two persons wearing masks and riding a motorcycle went to a plot in Najafgarh. The plot was owned by one Nafe Singh. They fired gun shots in the air and threatened the owner to leave the property. A case was registered at Najafgarh police station. On the night of December 18 and 19, a similar incident was reported and another case was registered at Najafgarh police station.
Both the incidents were captured on CCTV camera,” a police officer said.

Based on a tip-off, police arrested the two — Bijender and Pawan Maan. On their arrest, police found that Sandeep Mental, lodged in Tihar Jail, was behind the two incidents.

Police claimed that the accused said they terrorised the plot owners on Mental’s instructions. They also claimed that a member of Mental’s family had provided them with firearms and ammunition.

Police said Bijender was in Tihar jail with Mental. He was released on bail on December 4, after Mental arranged for his surety, police officers said.

Police said the plot in Najafgarh was earlier occupied by one Pradeep Banka and his brother Jaswant.

Mental had allegedly murdered Banka in 2012 to take over the plot. However, Mental was arrested and sent to jail.

Meanwhile, police said, Jaswant sold the plot to Nafe Singh. Mental desperately wanted to take over the said plot which is why he planned the land grab, police said.
