The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police said on Tuesday that it had busted an inter-state illegal arms racket with the arrest of a gangster who is allegedly an active member of the Hashim Baba gang.

The police identified the accused as Kapil and said that he was also a close associate of gangster Yogesh Bhati, who is currently lodged in Rohini Jail. The operation led to the recovery of two Beretta semi-automatic pistols, one country-made pistol, and 28 live cartridges, pointing to a highly organised arms supply chain operating across state lines, the police claimed.

“On the basis of specific and credible intelligence…regarding the movement of a gangster involved in illegal arms trafficking from Etah in Uttar Pradesh, a team was immediately constituted…a strategic trap was laid near Gopalpur on Outer Ring Road in Delhi. The suspect, Kapil,…was successfully apprehended,” Aditya Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, said. A case has been registered under sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act, he added.

During interrogation, Kapil allegedly revealed that he was operating at the behest of Bhati, who was managing the gang’s arms supply network from jail. The seized weapons were procured from a contact named Golu, who hails from Etah and is part of a larger arms trafficking nexus, the police said. The well-organised network is coordinated from within the prison, the police added.

According to the police, Kapil has been named in four robbery cases registered at the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station in 2018, the Moti Nagar police station in 2021, and the Patel Nagar police station in 2022 and 2023. His involvement in violent crimes and illegal arms procurement has made him a key operative in Delhi’s underworld, the police claimed.

An investigation is on to identify other members of the trafficking ring and trace the supply chain of these illegal weapons, the police said.
