A 32-year-old physically challenged woman was burnt to death Friday at a Nuh village during a clash between two families over the arrest of an accused in an eight-month-old murder case, police said Saturday.
The incident took place in Laharwadi village. While the accused’s family claimed the woman, Shehnaz, immolated herself, her relatives alleged she was set ablaze with petrol.
“The death of the woman in a clash between two groups is a matter of investigation,” Pradeep Kumar, DSP, Punhana, said. The woman suffered from a walking disability and died on the spot, police said. Police added that a murder case has been registered against 43 named and 10 unknown accused based on a complaint filed by Shehnaz’s father.
According to police, Shehnaz’s brother Rizwan was murdered at Laharwadi 8 months ago over a dispute involving dumping soil in a field. Friday’s clash occurred when the accused in his murder returned to the village. Rizwan’s family protested and the two families pelted stones, eventually leading to Shehnaz’s death, police added.
Anees, Shehnaz’s relative, said, “Before the incident, a meeting was held between the family of the accused and the deceased in the presence of police regarding Rizwan’s murder…” Shehnaz was a graduate student and had given her exam the day before she was killed, he added.
Punhana police had registered a case against 24 accused in Rizwan’s murder. While three were arrested, the rest had fled. “On Thursday, both parties were called to Punhana police station, where DSP Kumar was also present… There were many other villagers… some wanted the accused to return to the village,” said a senior officer.
