A passenger was arrested on Tuesday from Terminal III of the Indira Gandhi International airport for allegedly assaulting two immigration officials.

The accused, Joginder Singh, had been deported from England to Delhi for overstaying his visa.

He reportedly slapped the officials who were delaying his immigration clearance, police said.

“The passenger approached immigration for clearance. The two officials asked him to produce his emergency certificate, which is issued in such cases. However, when he produced his certificate the official asked him to report to the deportee room which Singh refused to do,” an airport official said.

The official said that Singh demanded that the procedure be completed at the earliest.

When the official refused, an irate Singh came around the immigration counter and slapped the official. When another official intervened, Singh slapped him as well, sources said.

He was soon overpowered and handed over to police. He has been charged under sections of obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duties and for assaulting a public servant.
