Days ahead of the municipal elections,a BJP party worker was stabbed to death allegedly by three persons of his own party,including a sitting councillor who is contesting the polls.
Jai Prakash (40) was stabbed,reportedly following an altercation with councillor Madhav Prasad (47) and his aides,at Platform 1 of Model Town railway station around 10.30 pm on Tuesday.
He later succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
Prasad,who is contesting the MCD polls from Sangam Vihar,and his two associates — Manoj and Anil Yadav — have been arrested.
The motive for murder,police said,seems to be political rivalry. “Jai Prakash and his associates reportedly questioned Prasad and his associates over the work he had done in the last five years. This led to an argument,which turned violent,” a senior police officer said.
Local residents said Prakash and Prasad were rivals and party ticket aspirants from the same ward. Since Prakash did not get a BJP ticket to contest the elections,he was upset. There are also reports that Prasad was trying to evict Prakash from the party.
Prakash’s wife Radha alleged that Prasad and his associates have been distributing money to gather votes. She said Prakash and his associates — Virender Yadav,Santosh and Balram — had tried to stop him,which enraged the councillor.
“My husband and his friends told Prasad to not distribute money as it is illegal. Prasad killed my husband because he tried to stop him from being corrupt,” Radha said.
Around 35 BJP workers were present for the Tuesday night meeting. Police have registered two cases.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways) Ashok Chand said,“The argument that triggered the fight is still not clear. We have registered two cases in the matter. One is against Madhav Prasad and his two associates — Manoj and Anil Yadav. All three have been arrested for murder and criminal conspiracy. The other party,involving Virender Yadav,has been arrested for attempt to culpable homicide. Santosh and Balram are absconding.”
Prasad has been sent to judicial custody till April 24.
