A day after they celebrated their sixth marriage anniversary,a partially-paralysed man allegedly strangled his wife and four-year-old son at their house in Rohini,Outer Delhi, early on Friday. Later,he called up the police and “confessed” to the crime.

Police said Nitin Maini (31) may have strangled Sweta (24) and their son,Garv, because he suspected that she was having an affair.

“He thought that Sweta had married again. Maini has been arrested, and a case of murder has been registered against him under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. We are now waiting for the report of the post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) P Karunakaran.

During questioning,Maini told police that Sweta had married a man living in Northeast Delhi.

“The man has been identified as a 36-year-old taxi driver who resides in Dilshad Garden. Sweta reportedly married him in January, and broke the news to Maini recently,” an officer told Newsline. Enraged,Maini allegedly decided to kill Sweta and Garv.

Maini, who used to work as a designer at a modular kitchen firm in South Extension, had married Sweta six years ago, despite her parents’ opposition. However,an accident that occurred three years ago left him paralysed below the waist. The couple and their son lived in a two-bedroom rented accommodation in Rohini with Maini’s mother,Sushma, and his brothers Shivam and Rohit.

Recalling the incident,Sushma said the couple had celebrated their sixth marriage anniversary the previous night. “We cut the cake and went to bed at 1 am. Nitin and Sweta were sleeping with Garv in their bedroom, with their door locked. While I was in the living room,my other two sons were asleep in the other bedroom. Around 2.30 am,I was woken up by police who informed me about the incident,” she said.

As the door of the bedroom was locked from inside, police had to break open the door to get in. The victims were found lying under a quilt on the bed, along with Maini.

“Three years ago,my son was going to work when a military truck hit his motorcycle from behind. He suffered severe spine injuries, and could not even turn on his side at night. He is always on a wheelchair. How could a man who has no strength kill two people?” Sushma asked, adding that Sweta’s family had been pushing her to remarry.

Sweta’s mother Nirmala said that after the accident, they had once asked her to marry one of Nitin’s younger brothers, but the idea was turned down.

According to her parents, they had called Sweta to wish her on their anniversary around 11.10 pm but the mobile phone was switched off. At 2 pm,they received a call from Maini, who said he had murdered their daughter and grandson.

Sweta’s father,Dinesh Verma,runs a jewellery shop in Jangpura.
