More than 250 residents of the Supertech Eco Village 2 society in Greater Noida, including 25 children, fell sick after drinking contaminated water on Monday.

“We are looking into the matter,” said Dr Sunil Kumar Sharma, Chief Medical Officer at the Gautam Buddh Nagar district hospital.

“Last night a team of doctors from Bisrakh visited the society and provided treatment to the children. Today teams from the district hospital and Bisrakh have been sent. We are waiting for a detailed report,” he said.

“A lot of people are suffering. Ambulances have been here since last night,” said D K Sinha, a resident of the society.

Sinha said the water that comes to the society is provided by the Greater Noida Authority.

“The lab test of the water will be done today. Only then will we know the source of the contamination,” said Sinha.

However, an official of the Greater Noida Authority said the problem seemed to have been caused by a lack of proper flushing of chemicals in the society’s water tank. He said that while the authority provides water to the society, the systems are installed by the society.

“The water tank was not flushed properly before refilling the water, it seems,” he said.

Many residents were treated at a nearby private clinic. Dr Jaitavya Kushwaha, a doctor at the clinic, said that 8-10 patients are at the hospital’s outpatient department. “Last night we closed the OPD at 1.30 am. We checked 80 people who complained of diarrhoea, stomachache and vomiting.

He said the residents of the society first started contacting the hospital at midnight. “All of them have the same symptoms,” said Dr Kushwaha.
