The Delhi Tourism department is set to introduce around three open-top,hop-on hop-off (HoHo) buses in the city on the lines of similar tourist buses in London,Paris and New York.
Purple UMTC Transit Ltd,the company that would operate these buses, said the proposal has been forwarded to the Delhi government for consideration. A meeting is expected at the chief secretarys office on Tuesday. We will work out the modalities to run these buses, a company official said.
As a publicity drive and to check the peoples response, the company has already started a dry run with a bus fitted with grills on its roof. We want to see the peoples reaction. So we installed grills on the roof of a bus to give the feel of an open-top one. So far,the response has been positive, the official said.
The open-top buses are expected to ply in North and Central Delhi.
Other buses will cover South Delhi. Some will be used as shuttle service between India Gate and Akshardham, the official said.
Low-floor buses would be converted into open-top ones. The routes will have to be carefully planned to ensure that flyovers, trees, overhead wires do not come in the way, a Delhi Tourism official said.
Delhi Tourism officials said over 170 people use the hop-on,hop-off service every day a remarkable increase in number since its launch before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
At present,14 HoHo buses are in operation. These buses start from Baba Kharak Singh Marg and cover 19 tourist attractions.
