A 35-year-old man was killed and five others, including two children, were injured after the driver of an SUV ran over a pedestrian, rammed a motorcycle and a container truck.

The incident was reported from South Delhi’s Mehrauli area around 10.30 pm on Sunday.

The accused is the owner of a furniture showroom in Ghitorni. Mahesh Kumar, one of the occupants of the SUV,said in his statement that Raj Kumar was driving the car while Mahesh was seated in the front and one Sominder was on the back seat.

According to the complaint, the SUV was being driven rashly. “Three of us had gone to a club for swimming. While returning to Ghitorni,Raj Kumar was driving the Scorpio. The speed of the car was over 130 km/h because of which he lost control and ran over a pedestrian who was crossing the road.”

Mahesh said even after running over the pedestrian,Raj Kumar accelerated,in a bid to escape, and hit a motorcycle from behind.

“Apart from the rider of the motorcycle, there were two children on the bike, who were also injured. Even after that,Raj Kumar did not slow down. He finally rammed a truck on the road,” Mahesh said.

He said Rajkumar fled the spot, leaving them in the car. “After he rammed the truck, the engine of the Scorpio was totally damaged and since I was sitting in the front,my head hit the windshield. Sominder and I sustained severe injuries. We were taken to a hospital.”

A senior police officer said: “The pedestrian who died in the accident was identified as Sanjeev. His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination and the family has been informed. The other five were admitted to the hospital and are undergoing treatment. We have also arrested Raj Kumar, the main accused in the case and have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death against him. Iinvestigation is underway.”
