A 25-year-old man was killed and five injured after an air-conditioner that was being repaired exploded. The incident was reported from the Department of Biotechnology, South Campus, on Friday afternoon.
Police identified the dead man as Shakeel, an AC mechanic. He and his assistant were repairing the split air-conditioner installed on the rooftop of the Department of Biotechnology building when the blast took place. Police said preliminary investigation revealed that during welding, the mechanics failed to detect a gas leak, which caused a blast in the compressor.
The mechanics were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where Shakeel was declared brought dead. His assistant, Sikander, has been admitted with burn injuries. Four women, all lab assistants in the Biotechnology department, who were in the building at the time of the blast, also suffered glass splinter injuries. They have been identified as Usha, Rupesh, Anjali and Simran.
“The two mechanics had come to the building on Friday morning. We will be able to ascertain the the exact cause of the blast only after Sikander is discharged from hospital,” an investigating officer said.
“The men were busy repairing the air conditioner, when all of a sudden, there was a blast. One of the mechanics died on the spot and another one was gravely injured. He was immediately taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and is out of danger,” Malay Neerav, media co-ordinator, Delhi University, said.
Shakeel was a resident of Rakab Ganj area in New Delhi, while Sikander stays with his family in Kotla Mubarakpur in South Delhi.
