On way to Karkardooma court,SI shot at

A 52-year-old Delhi police sub-inspector was allegedly shot at by two unidentified assailants in Seelampur area of Northeast district on Tuesday afternoon.

A 52-year-old Delhi police sub-inspector was allegedly shot at by two unidentified assailants in Seelampur area of Northeast district on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the police,the incident occurred around 3 pm when the Delhi Police sub-inspector,Fateh Singh,was going to the Karkardooma court from the Seelampur police station,where he has been posted for last two years.

“He was at the Welcome Metro station traffic signal (Chintamani Sharma Chowk),when two unidentified assailants opened fire on him. Before Singh could take out his service revolver that he was carrying,the assailants escaped. Singh even tried to chase them,but the assailants got away,” a senior police officer said. The sub-inspector also tried to note down the registration number of the motorcycle,but the number plate was bent and the digits were not visible,said police sources.

The police said Singh was shot at twice. While,one of the bullets brushed his shoulder,the other one missed him by few inches. He was taken to the Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital where his condition is said to be stable. The motive behind the attack is not clear and the police are investigating the matter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police,Northeast district,S S Yadav said,“We don’t think personal enmity or robbery could be the motive behind the attack. We suspect that it could be a case of mistaken identity. However,we are probing the matter.”

Singh was going to Karkardooma court to get a custodial extension of an accused,who was arrested by the Seelampur police and had left from the police station just minutes before the ambush,said the police.

“Initial investigations suggest that the assailants must have come to target someone else,but Singh became their target. Few persons have even been detained and Singh’s statement will also be recorded,” a senior police officer stated

A case of attempt to murder under section 307 has been registered at the Welcome police station and Singh’s family,who stay in Model Town police colony,have been informed.
