Abhin D Modak,DIG,Special Crime (Mumbai),who handled the Adarsh housing scam,also received the police medal. Medals for distinguished service were given to Tapan Jyoti Ghosh,Additional SP,Economic Offences Wing,Kolkata,and Kadayam Subramanian Nageswaran,Inspector with the multi-disciplinary monitoring agency probing the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

SP P L Meena,awarded the police medal for meritorious service,is handling the Special Crime Unit in the CBI headquarters. He probed the sensational Sarkar murder case (killed in 1998 at Subhash Nagar in Bihar’s Purnia district,in which the names of some influential politicians had surfaced) and also the infamous murder of DFO Sanjay Singh in Bihar.

Other awardees include Additional SP Jai Prakash Mishra,DSPs R V S Lohomor,K S Lochab,Prabhat Singh Jamwal,Sarala Das Mishra,Inspectors Praveen Kumar Tyagi and Vivek Dhir Shahnaz Khan,Sub-Inspector Rama Prasad Sarkar,ASI Ishwar Singh and Head Constables R C Katoch,K Premajan,Bansidhar Bijarnia and Vazir Singh.

The CRPF bagged the most number of gallantry medals — 34 — including four posthumously. Deputy Commandant P R Mishra has been decorated with a gallantry medal for the fifth time,the maximum for any officer in anti-Naxal operations. Constable Mahadev Minj was awarded the medal for gallantry (posthumously) after he braved bullets in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district last year when a helicopter came under Naxal fire.

Fifty-six BSF officials were also awarded police medals,including three for gallantry. The awardees of medals for distinguished service include DIG Vikash Chandra,who had played an role in the raising the elite Black Cat commando force NSG in 1984.

Three troopers — Deputy Commandant Arun Kumar and Constables Kamlesh Kumar and Satyaveer Singh — were awarded the police medal for gallantry in anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker last year.

Twenty-eight CISF personnel were also decorated with the police medal for distinguished and meritorious service. The awardees include Inspector-General Rajiva Ranjan Sahay,who is heading the important charge of airport security,senior Commandant (airport security,Patna) Shreekant Kishore,senior Commandant Ajay Kumar (New Delhi) and senior Commandant Madan K Singh (airport security,Mumbai).

Head Constables Siddalingayya and Uttar K Sharma were awarded fire service medals,given to personnel who show exemplary courage in fighting infernos.

NSG Team Commander A J Nair is among four officers who have been awarded the top service medal. Other awardees of the meritorious service medal of the commandos’ force include R S Siwach,Mahender Singh,P Kamal Kennan and S K Tiwari.
