Eleven artists explore the idea of a city through their works in different media

Delhi-based contemporary artist Arunkumar HG has used the map of India to define a city. His installation has broken mirrors in different shapes and sizes that etch out the interiors of India and a red border made of fur to mark its boundaries. The viewer can see his/her own reflection in the mirror. His work is part of the exhibition “Diver-Cities II” at Latitude 28 gallery, where 11 contemporary artists from different parts of India have explored the idea of a city through works in different media.

In his painting titled Icarus-Yet Another Attempt,Gigi Scaria has used the image of Icarus from Greek mythology standing atop a number of tall rocks with a reflection of high-rise buildings beneath him. “Icarus flew too close to the sun and eventually got burnt and drowned. The work deals with the ambition of people in this era of urbanisation,” he says.

Reliving his childhood dream of being a detective, graphic novelist Sarnath Banerjee has paid an ode to the Lalbazaar detective department in Kolkata through Lalbazaar Detective Department: Lower Pile, where he has formed an illustrated series of absconding criminals. “I have given shape to the basic character of these criminals by showing the peculiar way they like to kill their victims,” says Banerjee. In his work, there is the criminal Manik Roomali, shown with a scarf as a noose, with which he strangles his victim. There is also a widow with a smirk, thanks to the poisonous drinks she had given to her previous six husbands to amass their wealth.

In Sudipta Das’s life-size installation Samadhi made using torn pieces of paper,a man dressed in royal attire points in a particular direction and his boots have images of local people picked from the pages of history who worked for Indian kings. The Baroda-based artist has defined the city through the kings that ruled India.
