More than 200 students of the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia College of Nursing went on strike after a third-year B.Sc student alleged that she was verbally abused and physically manhandled by the college vice-principal and coordinator on Friday afternoon. Both of them are women.
The incident occurred when the girl went to fetch a rejoining form after going on a weeks sick leave. The victims fellow students, who were present at the spot, told Newsline that when the victim went to a teacher for getting a rejoining form, the latter started commenting on how dirty her uniform was. Then she was taken to the principals room.
Once she went inside, the principal started commenting on her clothes and family background. She started abusing her, stating that her parents were not even willing to spend Rs 5 on soap for her, a third-year student and her classmate said. The alleged victim hails from Kerala.
The vice-principal then asked her to come close to her. When she refused, the coordinator held her by the neck and pushed. The vice-principal then grabbed her kurta and tore it. She told her that she will make her remove her lowers and parade her naked in the hostel if she wears a dirty uniform again, the student added.
Following that, the vice-principal told her to go to her room and not tell anyone about the incident, she said.
Later, other teachers in the room abused her until she left the room crying, the student said. She came and sat in class, crying while holding her kurta with her left hand. I tried asking her,but she did not tell me anything. It was only later that she told me the whole story. She said the vice-principal passed derogatory comments on her fathers profession and family background. She also used abusive language. My friend is very disturbed, a hostel-mate said.
The students said they tried to lodge an official complaint against the coordinator and the vice-principal,but to no avail. Following that, the students sat on a strike outside the hospital, seeking dismissal of the two officials.
After this has happened to our friend,we will not keep mum. We have been on strike since 11 pm last night. We sat here till 4 am this morning and we will keep the protest going till we get justice, a student said. She alleged that a male attendant had molested a second-year student a month ago,but the issue was supressed.
The Medical Superintendent of the hospital,Dr T S Sidhu, said an inquiry committee will be formed to look into the matter and the accused will be punished,if found guilty. We have formed an inquiry committee, comprising a head of the department and a senior surgeon, both lady doctors. They will look into the matter and give the report in three days. The report will be submitted by Tuesday evening, Dr Sidhu said.
The accused teachers have been sent on forced leave till the issue is resolved.
